Brain Health

According to the World Health Organization, by 2030, brain-related disability will account for 50 percent of the worldwide economic impact of disability. A 2022 definition by the World Health Organization of brain health is:

"The state of brain functioning across cognitive, sensory, social–emotional, behavioural and motor domains, allowing a person to realize their full potential over the life course, irrespective of the presence or absence of disorders." The WHO recognizes that brain health encompasses neural development, plasticity, functioning, and recovery across the lifetime of an individual"

Some typical challenges occurring with less than optimal brain health include:

  1. Brain fog

  2. Difficulty concentrating

  3. Poor memory

  4. Disrupted sleep

  5. Mood swings

The brain draws down approximately 20 percent of daily calories as energy for its functions. With such a metabolic demand from an organ representing 2 percent of a human's body weight, optimal nutrition is essential to meet these energy demands. A large portion of this demand is met by the carbohydrate and glucose content of the diet. However, in a percentage of persons from as early as the mid-forties, there is a reduction in the brain's ability to use glucose for energy. This decreasing brain glucose consumption facilitates the development of the above health challenges and even more severe neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and dementia.

Past and ongoing research has uncovered that a major mechanism in developing inadequate brain health is a marked reduction in brain energy supplies. Technically known as brain hypometabolism, a ketogenic and low-carb diet is poisted to alleviate this troublesome phenomenon.

Ketogenic and low carbohydrate eating across the lifespan is now understood as necessary to eliminate the social isolation, depression, helplessness, and loss of function in daily living activities that accompany failing brain health. The advice of the day across populations is to ignore the overconsumption of carbohydrates (all types) in our foods, such as snacks, toiletries, and medicines, which is taking a toll on multiple healthcare systems globally.

In 2024, we not only have to deal with

  • Type 1 diabetes (autoimmune) and

  • Type 2 diabetes (lifestyle mismanagement), but we have firmly entrenched

  • Type 3 diabetes (overconsumption of carbohydrates) into the fabric of daily living. Type 3 diabetes is also known as insulin resistance, causing Alzheimer's disease.

The quote below highlights the grim reality of Alzheimer's disease.

"According to a report by Alzheimer’s Disease International, there are over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia in 2020, and this number is expected to almost double every 20 years, reaching 78 million in 2030 and 139 million in 2050 The same report estimates that the global number of persons with Alzheimer’s disease, prodromal Alzheimer’s disease, and preclinical Alzheimer’s disease were estimated at 32, 69, and 315 million, respectively, in 2019 2Together they constituted 416 million across the Alzheimer’s continuum, or 22% of all persons aged 50 and above".

Therefore, global attempts to reduce our daily intake of all types of carbohydrates must intensify to eliminate the catastrophic decimation of brain health and wellness.

Regardless of age or stage of life, demands of work or play, providing an energy-sparing and regeneration strategy to nourish the brain is essential from the fourth decade of life and beyond.
